The nape of the neck is one of those special places that both women and men regard as special for different reasons. Men like it because it’s a great place to kiss a woman. Women love it because…well, just because it’s beautiful. And for others, it’s their “spot.”

Yet, even with all this love, many have an issue with this problem area that the hair on it can become thin, brittle and break off. Let’s look at some things that may be causing it:

Stress Hairstyles: Ponytails and buns are go-to styles for many women, but they can easily cause damage all the way around the hairline. The same goes for tight braids and extensions. Some ladies want sleek hairdos that don’t budge in a strong wind, so they may rely on heavy gels and lots of brushing to get their edges as flat and smooth as possible. Constant tension along the hairline will lead to thinning and breakage.

Wrong Product Application: n the quest for a smooth hairline, bad relaxer application can also lead to a thinning nape. Either the chemicals are left on too long or the strength of the relaxer is too high.

Too Much Manipulation: Smoothing over this area throughout the day, or manipulating it constantly, is another way to thin the nape. Some women just have a hard time keeping their hands out of their hair.

Wrong Accessories: With all of the good accessories available, there’s no need to use any that will cause damage and breakage. Avoid any scrunchies, elastics and headbands with metal pieces. Wearing these hard pieces at the nape area is a sure way to pull on the delicate hair there and break it off.

1. Cleanse & condition the scalp & hair in the nape & perimeter area
Because the nape and perimeter of your head are often forgotten you could be neglecting to properly cleanse and condition these areas of your hair. By regularly cleansing and conditioning (gently of course) you will make sure that these areas are receiving the same amount of love and attention as the rest of your hair. This also means applying ample deep conditioner to these areas as well.

2. Massage It With Oils
Massaging the nape on a weekly basis will help stimulate blood to the area promoting new growth. Warm a few tablespoons of your favorite oil, dip your fingers into the oil and gently massage in circular motions for 2-5 minutes. Your scalp will thank you for the extra TLC!

3. Avoid Abrasive Fabrics
