Many men and women feel anxious about having sex during menstruation. Some have been culturally conditioned to believe it’s dirty. Others are apprehensive due to faulty thinking or understanding surrounding the medical aspects of having sex while on your period. The Twin Doctors and board-certified OB/GYNs based in Chicago, Dr. Jamil and Idries Abdur-Rahman, shared
what you need to know to stay safe while being sexually active during that time of the month.

“Lots of women do have sex during their periods and many say that it helps with typical period complaints like cramping. Is sex during one’s period an absolute no-no? No, it’s not. Is it something that you should think twice about? Yes, and here is why,” began Dr. Idries.

“During the menstrual period, the cervix (the bottom of the uterus) is open. This allows the blood and tissue to leave the uterus and pass through the vagina. With the cervix open, any STI that a woman contracts during her period has a better chance of going into the uterus which can lead to a serious condition called PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). PID, in severe cases, can lead to infertility and even loss of the uterus. Additionally, menstrual blood (like all other blood) potentially contains infectious organisms including HIV,” continued Dr. Idries.
