Money, money, money! Hate it or love it, you need it to survive. Last year, during the pandemic, I increased my earnings by doing a few side hustles. These are not those get rich quick schemes, just honest work, but not so popular.

From each side hustle, I made approximately 20,000naira per month. I could have made more but I was too busy working on other projects and my business however, there is money to be made in these industries.

Tasting Virtual Food

This was the most fun I have ever had working online. Taste-testing usually takes place in dedicated taste test facilities but because of the pandemic, they would  tell you to do an online virtual taste test from just looking at the photo  and then send the product to you if they think your description of the taste is correct !

WOW ! strange but it pays

Companies need real people to taste their products before they officially launch them. I got to taste candy bars, potato chips, soda, bread, nuts and seeds and various other food items.

I got paid 5000 to 10,000  for each photo taste test. Each month, I would earn approximately that too !

Voice Recognition

I had no intention of working as a voice recognition operative, I was invited to work on a project and I accepted.

Voice recognition or speech recognition operatives record their voices into a phone or recording device to provide human voices for speech recognition technology. There are thousands of companies that require speech recognition freelancers, it’s the easiest money you will ever make.

The company I worked with hired me through Upwork. They invited me to the job and I accepted. I earned $65 per project. I had to repeat approximately 50 sentences and it took me less than an hour to do it. Receiving Text Messages

All I did for this was sign up for an app called McMoney. They pay between $0.01 and $0.20 per text message depending on where you are in the world. If you live in the United States or the UK, you will get paid more than the rest of the world. With this, large companies such as Microsoft and Google need to test their SMS technology regularly to make sure it works efficiently for their customers.

Earning a few cents per message won’t make you rich, however, if you refer people, you will increase your earnings. They pay $1 per referral as long as they start receiving messages, you will earn the $1 referral fee. I earned an extra $200 per month with this because I wrote an extensive blog post about making money online and I created a YouTube video about passive income, my subscribers and readers, followed the link and used my code.

Sleep Study

I signed up for a human study at the beginning of last year and did a few question and answer sessions. However, the most profitable study was a sleep study where they sent me some images and songs and I had to look at the images and listen to the songs at night before going to bed. The next day I had to document my sleep pattern for the night. I did this for three days and earned 10,500 naira  for this particular study.

I took part in two more sleep studies throughout the year and earned $300 and $200 for each one.

Talking to Lonely Strangers who need advice

This particular company no longer hires operatives because they operate on an invite-only basis now. However, for this side hustle , I literally spent a couple of hours a day chatting with lonely strangers who need help and advice.

The messages come through an online platform and you just respond with about 40 to 50 words. It’s simple and you earn 0.50 us/100naira per  cents per message. Throughout the month, I would send enough messages to earn 20,000 naira .

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of unusual ways of making money online, these are just some of the ways. I don’t do these side hustles anymore but I will dip into them in the future if I need to.
